We seek to become an impactful Hawaiian Cultural School found outside the State of Hawaii. We hope that it is through engaging the community-at-large that we can foster friendships across many cultures and create a "home away from home" for all who come through our hālau doors while perpetuation the rich and vast culture of the Hawaiian people.
Hālau Hō‘'ola Ka Mana O Hawai‘'i is a traditional hula hālau based in Houston, Texas. We are also an incorporated non-profit organization of the State of Texas. The hālau was founded by and is currently under the direction of Kumu Hula - Frank Keli'i Chang, III.
The name of the hālau, Hālau Hō'ola Ka Mana O Hawai'i, means "Resurrect the power of Hawaii -- the hula." Our mission is to create resource centers aimed at 1) preserving the past of Hawaiian culture; 2) perpetuating its future, and 3) educating a variety of haumāna about hula -- the power of Hawai'i.
All are welcome to join! Don't be "hilahila," or shy, about contacting us and finding out how you can get involved.
Kumu Hula, Frank Keli'iipihamekalokomaika'iikeaonei Chang III was born in Honolulu, O'ahu - Hawai'i, and has over 30 years of experience in teaching the Hawaiian Culture and has dedicated his entire life in perpetuating the Hawaiian Culture wherever he has lived and traveled.
In his youth, Frank was carefully trained and tutored by Mr. Newton Ka'anohi Hitchcock, Mrs. Rebeccah Kahale'eaokekaulike Bodnar, Mrs. Sara Moanikealaonapuamakahikina Wood-Nalua'i, Mr. Ainsley George Kananiokeakua Holokai, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Chang Jr.
Frank's main purpose in teaching hula is to train future teachers to carry on the rich traditional heritage of his hula lineage.
In 1987, Hālau Hōʻola Ka Mana O Hawaiʻi was born. The hālau has performed throughout the State of Texas teaching traditional hula and spreading the true spirit of aloha. The hālau has participated at the prestigious Folklife Festival in San Antonio, and the world famous Dickens on the Strand in Galveston. The hālau has also performed at the world famous Kodak Hula Show in Waikīkī.
The hālau has also competed in many competitions in California and Hawaiʻi. In 2000, the hālau was invited to compete at the world famous Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo, Hawaiʻi. The hālau continues to compete and spread traditional Hawaiian Culture through hula throughout the State of Texas and beyond.
